Middle School parents and students gathered in our Library Tech Commons for a series of “Book and Bagel” discussion groups. Fourth-grade boys and their parents met on Wednesday, November 13 to discuss the book The Bridge Home by Padma Venkatraman. The book focuses on four homeless children living in Chennai, India, and brings attention to the harsh reality faced by millions of children. Sisters Viji and Rukku form bond a with two homeless boys, Muthi and Arul, on an abandoned bridge. With no adults to care for them, Viji has to step up to fight for her sister, Rukku, when she falls seriously ill.
Then on Friday, November 15, fifth- and sixth-grade boys and their parents gathered to discuss the graphic novel New Kid by Jerry Craft. New Kid is about Jordan, a boy of color starting at a new school that lacks diversity. Jordan struggles to fit in at this prestigious school while at the same time maintaining his identity.
The boys and their parents engaged in discussions about the books, sharing their main take-aways with each other. The boys discussed the characters, pointing out which characters were allies and sharing ways in which they could identify with the characters - even homeless children living across the world in a different culture from their own.
We look forward to hosting more parent-child book discussions through this school year!
